Hashimotos Thyroiditis - Is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland is gradually
destroyed by a variety of cell and antibody mediated immune processes. This disease
is responsible for considerable morbidity in women.
Affects women more than men, at a ratio of between 10:1 and 20:1, and is most prevalent
between 45 and 65 years of age.
When left untreated, the disease can be fatal, as the underactive thyroid leads to
muscle weakness, which will eventually cause heart failure.
The condition can cause myxedema, a dangerous skin and tissue condition. The condition
is manageable, more so when caught early.
Symptoms and signs may occur such as:
Abnormal weight gain.
Pale skin.
Hoarseness.
Muscle weakness.
Dry skin.
Joint pain.
Sensitivity to cold.
Swollen face.
The thyroid gland typically becomes firm, large and lobulated.
