Amitriptyline - Triptafen®                                                                                                                                                                                                            

Amitriptyline belongs to the tricyclic class of antidepressants. It works by altering the way in which the central nervous system reacts to pain. Amitriptyline is given orally as tablets. Dosages vary, and it is often taken at night as it can cause drowsiness. Amitriptyline normally takes between two to four weeks to take effect.

Side effects may occur                                                                                                                                                                                                                

• Dry mouth.
• Skin sensitivity.
• Blurred vision.
• Urinary retention.
• Constipation.

Contra indications                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Amitriptyline adds to the effects of:

• Alcohol.  
• Antihistamines.
• Sedatives.
• Tranquillisers.
• Prescription pain medications.
• Seizure medications.
• Muscle relaxants.
• Sleeping medications.

MS - a low dose may be used for pain relief, particularly for:

• Neuropathic pain in the arms and legs.
• Burning sensations.
• Pins and needles.
• Stabbing pains.
• Some mild bladder symptoms.

Some of the side effects of amitriptyline are similar to common symptoms of MS, consult your clinician if an abrupt change of this type occurs.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their clinician.
