Phytochemicals  (chemicals from plants) - Non-nutritive plant chemicals that have protective or disease preventive properties. They are neither trace minerals, vitamins nor dietary fibre. There are more than a thousand known phytochemicals. A plant produces these chemicals to protect itself , and they are not required by the human body for sustaining life.

Most phytochemicals have potent anti-oxidant actions, they are able to neutralise free radicals that are able to cause cell damage.
