About Us
A group of disaffected sufferers of autoimmune and neurological disease came together
during 2004 to form an independent pressure group.
Dissatisfied with their experiences and being uncomfortable with what they considered
to be detrimental comments and actions of others they decided that they wanted to
have an independent voice, a voice more demanding of action at the levels of treatment,
cure, national and international politics.
All of the those involved in Proventus are volunteers - the charity relies on membership
and donations to do its work, it accepts no monies from the pharmaceutical industry
or related business’s.
We
- Research and provide information about new and novel treatments, the claims that
surround them, what anecdotal stories are available, how truthful are testimonials,
what single case studies there are.
- Research alternative / complementary therapies.
- Research wellness programmes for the sufferer to use that enables them to combat
the day to day problems which arise.
- Research various appliances.
- Research claims made by third parties in support of DMD’s, therapies, appliances.
- Research media hype, misrepresentation and false dawn propaganda.
- Provide such information to the sufferer, carers and families.
- Provide links to other groups.
Sufferers are vulnerable - when seeking help and information it invariably costs
them time and money - a lot of money, at Proventus we believe they should receive
helpful information and support for minimal or no cost.
Proventus attempts to be a well informed listening organisation and be highly focused
on the day to day problems many endure
Commercial sponsorship
Commercial sponsorship of health-related research and information is, of course,
not an issue of concern uniquely to Proventus. Any perception that for-profit commercial
organisations, notably but not exclusively;
- The pharmaceutical industry.
- Medical device manufacturers.
- Supplement manufacturers or providers.
- Private practice clinicians
- Other for non profit organisations (charities and pressure groups)
Were influencing or attempting to influence the information provided by and the actions
undertaken by Proventus, would damage our reputation for impartiality and the questioning
efforts we undertake.
