Your body is made up of organic and inorganic substances. Organic substances are
produced by chemical reactions. They are created and broken down to be recreated
from constituent parts of the food that is eaten and the air that is breathed. Organic
substances are proteins, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins. The Inorganic substances
are minerals.
Minerals are elements - the simplest form of substances - many of which are essential
in trace amounts for normal metabolic processes.
Minerals are classified according to the amount your body needs, each one is affected
by the others through a complex metabolic interrelationship, either working in conjunction
with or opposing each other.
If the body requires more than 100 milligrams of a mineral each day, that substance
is known as a macro mineral.
If the body requires less than 100 milligrams of a mineral each day, that substance
is known as a trace element.
What do minerals do?
They assist in the functioning of the immune system.
They provide stimulus for the muscles to contract.
They are involved in maintaining and repairing tissues and bone.
They form parts of enzymes, which participate in the regulation of physiological
functions.
Unless an underlying problem exists such as; poor absorption, autoimmune disease,
coeliac disease, which may cause a deficiency, minerals are normally obtained from
a healthy lifestyle diet.
Note - Supplements should never be taken in an attempt to redress a considered imbalance
without a complete assessment of the person, and only under professional guidance.
Always obtain as much information as you can from more than one source.
