Helicobacter Pylori - H. Pylori

A bacterium, a kind of germ, which lives in the sticky mucus that lines the stomach.

Helicobacter pylori causes a chronic low-level inflammation of the stomach lining and is strongly linked to the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers and stomach cancer. H. pylori is a major cause of diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract. Eradication of the infection in individuals will improve symptoms including dyspepsia, gastritis and peptic ulcers, and may prevent gastric cancer

H. pylori infection is most likely acquired by ingesting contaminated food and water and through person to person contact.

H. pylori also is associated with stomach cancer and a rare type of lymphocytic tumor of the stomach called MALT lymphoma.
