Modafinil - Provigil®                                                       

An anti-narcoleptic medication used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by sleep disorders such as:

• Narcolepsy
• Sleep apnoea.

Sometimes used off-label to treat:

• Attention-deficit - hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
• Fatigue

It is an oral drug that is used for improving wakefulness in patients with excessive sleepiness. The effect of modafinil is similar to caffeine.

Both drugs (Modafinal & Caffeine) promote wakefulness by stimulating the brain. Thus, both drugs are considered stimulants.

Side effects may occur                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

• Anxiety.
• Bruising or bleeding.
• Chest pain.
• Depression.
• Diarrhoea.
• Difficulty breathing.
• Dizziness.
• Dry mouth.
• Feeling nervous or agitated.
• Fever.
• Headache.
• Hallucinations.
• Hives.
• Insomnia.
• Muscle weakness.
• Nausea.
• Numbness.
• Pain.
• Severe tingling.
• Sore throat.
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Uneven heart beats.
• Unusual thoughts or behaviour.
• Vomiting with severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash.
• White patches or sores inside the mouth or on the lips.
• Fatigue.

In rare cases, the medication can cause a life-threatening side effect known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This problem begins with a rash, therefore, contact your clinician immediately if you develop any unexplained rash while taking modafinil.
