Gluten is the key protein in wheat, it is also found in rye, barley and oats.

Oats contain another protein called gliadin and  can sometimes be tolerated by Coeliac’s.

Non gluten grains include rice, corn, buckwheat, quinoa, millet and amaranth.

Ref 1.

With Coeliac disease, you need to give up all the gluten in your diet. Gluten is found in bread and any flour products as well as many processed, packaged foods.

Avoiding Gluten is a challenge, especially when eating out.

Being strict is vital, it requires less than half a gram of gluten a day to cause toxic inflammation and cell death in your intestines.

There is a very slight chance that severe coeliac disease may lead to the development of lymphomas (malignant tumours) or  leiomyomas (benign tumours).

Coeliac disease is also associated with osteoporosis.

A simple blood test is required that measures for Ig anti-tissue transglutaminase (IgAtTG) antibodies.

A genetically transferred digestive and malnutrition disorder caused by an extreme allergy to gluten.

You may be symptom free yet still have a Coeliac Disease problem.

Coeliac Disease cause the Villi (The tiny finger-like protrusions in the intestine walls that aid nutrient absorption) to become shrivelled up and flattened  which greatly affects the ability to digest and absorb.

Coeliac disease is a life long inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract.
