Physiotherapy
A Health Care profession concerned with the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the physical function and performance of the body. It is a distinct form of care which can be performed both in isolation or in conjunction with other types of medical management.
.
Physiotherapy can help individuals by:
Identifying a problem area and treating this
directly.
Physiotherapists treat a wide variety of problems using many different techniques.
In many cases, the causes of pain and dysfunction are obvious, but sometimes things
are not so black and white, especially when symptoms are inconsistent or difficult
to describe or understand.
Physiotherapists can perform a wide range of tests to help locate the source of
the problem and implement the appropriate treatment strategy.
Identifying the causes
and predisposing factors.
Physiotherapists are not only interested in the problem,
but factors which contribute to the problem. Such as poor posture, improper techniques,
muscle imbalances, compromised muscle strength and use due to disease and disorder
allowing interventions to be made to try to correct these factors.
Providing rehabilitation and exercise
Making sure your length of stay in hospital
or rehabilitation is not unexpectedly extended.
Advising on special equipment.
Different
conditions or diseases can lead to a situation where special equipment may be required.
Physiotherapists can advise on many different types of equipment, including splints,
walking aids, wheelchairs, occupational equipment etc.
That is the theory -
Physiotherapy is an important tool that enable MS people to maintain their independency, it is not the only tool in the box either, a combination of physiotherapy, medical treatment, alternative therapy intervention, lifestyle dietary application (optimum nutrition) etc is required to be applied at a personal level for any MS person to manage the problem.
The problem is getting sufficient assistance within the health system, and guidelines on a one to one basis to help you manage your MS and your life.
Physiotherapy on the NHS?
The criteria is;

2.
The person has a named Consultant Neurologist.
3.
The person meet one of the named criteria.
a.
The person with MS experiences reduced mobility or any other limitation that affects or threatens their daily activities, and who has not been seen by a physiotherapist since that limitation arose?
b.
Any person who requires specialist advice or information regarding their physical management.
c.
Specialist advice or opinion with regard to a MS person’s physical management is required by any one of the referring health care professionals.
A physiotherapist will undertake an assessment to identify the MS person’s needs, provide advice and information, or referral to appropriate services.
Referral from MS services are directed to the nearest physiotherapist experienced in the treatment of MS.
Does this appear to be helpful?
The experiences of the members with MS indicates that physiotherapy is an effective tool and would enable them to manage their MS better. It is required three to four times per week.
Now we hear about cost...! Cost to who?
An MS person with proper support costs far less than an MS person left to fend for themselves
